Week in Review: Feb. 6-10, 2012

I am SO over illnesses in this family. Yep, the week started out with sick children. :(

Math BamBam and Primpress continued to review whole and half-hours in Math Mammoth this week. Towards the end of the week they dipped a toe into minutes. This corresponded with BamBam's MUS. He began the unit on telling time to the minute. He also completed three lessons in multiple digit subtraction. Primpress completed four lessons on two's subtraction and two lessons on her new unit of nine's subtraction.

Language Arts BamBam had a review week in spelling. He doesn't mind it - it involves lots of fun worksheet activities on words that he already knows. Primpress worked on words that have the 'ou' sound and the different spellings that go along with it.

BamBam read The Spiderwick Chronicles #5, and thus completing the series. I was hoping to get him into something else, but then he discovered Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles. haha! I'm not sure what else BamBam read this week, but it seems he spent most of his time this week curled up in a chair and reading. Primpress has almost finished reading her children's Bible. She also completed five lessons in OPGTR. All the lessons reviewed r-controlled vowels.

In grammar, BamBam had a testing week. He did well. I still need to work on linking verbs with him a bit more. He had no problem with adjectives - yay! Primpress completed four lessons in her grammar. Again, most of it was review of initials, abbreviations, and action verbs.

Writing is BamBam's subject. Despite the fact that he was ill at the beginning of the week, he managed to squeeze the entire week of writing lessons into two days. He worked on narration and dictation from The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks by Nancy McArthur. I love that his writing work comes from books. He becomes interested in the books after working on writing with them. His narration is becoming very good. He's intuitively finding the bones of the story and putting them together to say back to me. Primpress worked on what probably became the biggest rabbit trail last year - The Happy Hollisters by Jerry West. We found the passages so intriguing that the Happy Hollisters became a daily discussion for quite a while (along with many books checked out from the library).

History reading for the week

History History was almost a wash this week, and not because we didn't do it, but because I made the mistake of getting next week's book from the library. Next week: GLADIATORS! This week was merely the myth of Romulus and Remus. Hehe! Not near as fun and exciting as gladiators. Nonetheless, the kids were excited to color the book cover's page of an infant Romulus and Remus with a she-wolf. We talked a bit about Italy, Rome, and the Etruscans, completed a map page of Italy, and put together another mini-book for our lapbook.

Other BamBam and Daddy enjoyed some time together at Monster Jam. I was treated to monster truck talk the rest of the day. :) While they were gone, the rest of us chowed down on more Amish White Bread. That stuff is wonderfully evil, especially with butter spread across a warm piece.

The Punk went to Oklahoma City for a drill meet this weekend. They placed third overall, which is fantastic. Even better, the Color Guard placed first! Next week they have another drill meet. If they place third or higher, they will go to Florida for Nationals.

Next week is our off week. This is my chance to get some projects completed around the house (and to take a breather). For the kids, I have an art unit planned. We will make gladiator helmets and play some math games. I have several books on hold at the library, so the kids will get to indulge in their reading.
